Singer sewing machines mount to large wooden tables. When not in use, the sewing machine flips down into the table so you can use the top of the table for storage. The mounted sewing machine and the overall height of the table make it a poor coffee table candidate in its natural state. However, with a few minor conversions, you can quickly convert a singer sewing machine table into a coffee table. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Flip the sewing machine into the upright position and lock it in place.
2Locate the mounting screws and brackets that secure the swing machine to the table. Remove the mounting screws and brackets with a screwdriver. The number and location of the brackets will vary depending on the model of sewing machine and table you own.
3Lift the sewing machine off the table and place it to the side.
4Measure the distance between the top of your couch's seat cushion and the floor. In general, the distance should be between 16 to 18 inches. Measure the height of your table and subtract the difference, which is the length you must remove from the table legs. For example, if your table is 36 inches tall and your couch is 18 inches tall, you must remove 18 inches from the legs.
5Measure up from the floor and mark each leg to mark the location where you must cut. Consistency on each leg is important. If you cut one leg at a slightly different height, the table will wobble.
6Cut each leg off at the mark with a hacksaw or a flat saw. Keep the cuts flat.
7Sand the surface of the cuts with sandpaper or a file to remove any rough edges.
8Stain the freshly cut wood with a wood stain that matches as closely as possible to the original stain. If the table was painted over the years, use matching paint to cover the wood.
9Rotate the table top to the closed position just as you would if storing the sewing machine inside the table.
