Ants and picnics seem to go together, so why not make a few to bring along on purpose. Serve up some fancy paper plates of fake food and ants, draw or embroider them onto your picnic table spread, decorate napkin rings or wear them on sneakers or your favorite pair of jeans.
Picnic Plates
Print off a coloring page of picnic food. Color the food items, cut them out and arrange them on a paper plate. Glue the pictures to the plate. Cut ant outlines from black construction paper and glue them to the paper plates. Alternatively, make the food out of air-dry clay and use little plastic ants instead of paper for a 3-D effect.
Ants on the Tablecloth
Draw outlines of ants on a plastic table cloth, and color them in. Work carefully to make them appear realistic. Alternatively, embroider ants on a fabric table cloth. Make them as realistic as possible to startle friends and relatives. Tuck the decorated table cloth into your next picnic basket, and wait for reactions.
Napkin Rings
Cut discarded cardboard rolls from paper towels into 3-inch tubes. Cover them with fabric or adhesive shelf paper to create napkin rings. Glue plastic or construction paper ants to them. Embroider ants on cloth napkins, or draw them on paper napkins. Place the decorated napkins in the napkin rings, and use them with your decorated table cloth.
Ants to Go
Use fabric paint to decorate tennis shoes, jeans, shorts or T-shirts with climbing ants. Add a touch of whimsy by having them appear to be climbing into or out of pockets. If you want textured ants, use fabric puffy paints instead of basic flat paint. Draw the ants in a parade so they appear to be climbing out of pockets or over your collar. Draw picnic food on the garments, and show the ants attending the feast.
